Shelby: Why is it every time you say the name Damien it makes my skin crawl?
Madison: Because Damien is a very evil man. However, I didn't figure that out until it was too late. Before that, I was in love with him. He was the prince of a neighboring kingdom who courted me for ten years.
Shelby: That long?
Madison: Well, I'm much older than you think and when you live as long as I do everything just takes longer.
Selby: Oh...not that it matters, but how old are you?
Madison: I stopped counting the years a long time ago, but it's somewhere between two and three hundred.
Shelby: *boggle*
Madison: Anyway...Damien...
Shelby: Sorry, go on.
Madison: We were betrothed with the intention of uniting our two kingdoms upon our marriage. But on the night of the formal betrothal announcement he came to see me alone...and stole my essence.
Shelby: Er...essence?
Madison: The essence is the inner source of an enchantress's or sorcerer's power. It's like a part of their soul.
Shelby: I wouldn't think it would be possible to steal something like that.
Madison: It is, but don't ask me to go into detail about how. Just believe me when I tell you it is the cruelest of violations, second only to murder among my people. Once stolen, the essesnce is impossible to recover.
Shelby: Why would someone do such a thing?
Madison: To increase their own magical power. It is a purely selfish act.
*Sebastian enters as they are talking*
Shelby: Madison, this is terrible! Having something like that happen to you by someone you loved and trusted? You have been suffering alone for so long...you should have told me this much sooner!
Sebastian: Yes, she should have. But do not be too hard on her, it is the way of our people to be proud and secretive. This betrayal is the hardest of all to bear and come to terms with.
Madsion: How patient Damien was, how long he waited for the moment to act...just at the point it would bring me the most humiliation. I really think he meant to kill me when he was done, but Sebastian came and stopped him. Damien fled and has not been seen since. If Sebastian had not been there... *shudder*
Sebastian: I should have been there sooner. I failed in my duty to you.
Madison: Sebastian, I don't blame you. You shouldn't blame yourself.
Shelby: But you told me your family has forsaken you...why?
Sebastian: *grinds teeth*
Madison: They blame me for what happened, they said I should have prevented it.
Shelby: But...that's crazy!
Sebastian: I wholeheartedly agree. I've been trying to convince our parents for the past year to see it differently. I haven't had much success.
Madison: They don't know how to respond, there hasn't been another case of the essence being stolen for over 1,000 years. It just never happens. *sigh*
*Sabrina enters*
Sebastian: *to Sabrina* You haven't been playing with my sword, have you?
Sabrina: I haven't touched your sword...since the last time I touched it.
*Madison and Shelby have a brief discussion as Sebastian and Sabrina argue*
Madison: One more thing--Damien looks almost exactly like Alex...except for the eyes. The first time I saw Alex I nearly ran off in a panic, I thought he was Damien coming to finish me off! Then I realized how ridiculous that was...
Shelby: ...And then when Alex flirted with you and asked you out...
Madison: Yes! It just brought these memories of Damien flooding back. I came here for forget about him, yet here was Alex who so painfully reminded me of him. Poor Alex! I was very unfair in my treatment of him. I should not have blamed him, as I did in my own silly way. I should have been nicer...he is nothing like Damien at all.
Shelby: This all makes sense now...
Madison: Yes, but I still feel bad about Alex.
Shelby: I'm sure Alex is fine. When you are ready maybe you can try to explain it to him...or something.
Madison: Maybe, we'll see.
*Alex wanders into the scene*
Alex: Hey, what's up? Who are these people...
Sabrina: Whoa...
Sebastian: YOU!
Alex: Huh?
Madison and Shelby: Oh no...
Madison: Sebastian...
Sebastian: *shouting* How dare you come near my sister!
Sabrina: Er...wait a minute...
Alex: Dude, I don't even know your sister! What's going on?
Sebastian: *stretches out his hand towards Alex* Now I will make you pay for what you have done!
Madison: Sebastian, no!
